Ruston, La. – No. 4 Texas State fell behind early to No. 5 UTSA as it was unable to capture the win today in the first game of the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Roadrunners earned a 6-0 victory over the Bobcats to advance in the winners bracket at Lady Techster Softball Complex.
UTSA (27-24) used a five-run third inning to take the early lead over Texas State. The Roadrunners had back-to-back singles by Paige Hamilton and Darian Blake to lead off the third inning. Bobcat pitcher Rayn House struggled to get any calls, as she walked the next two batters and the go-ahead run.
With the bases still loaded and no outs, Jolene Graham hit a grand slam to left center to boost UTSA's lead to 5-0.
The next three innings, saw neither team able to cross the plate, but that all changed in the seventh inning. Designated player Samantha Beeson recorded an RBI single in the top of the seventh for UTSA to extend the Roadrunners lead to 6-0.
The Bobcats (16-37) weren't able to score runs this afternoon, but it wasn't due to the lack of hits. Texas State and UTSA tied with seven hits apiece. Kelli Baker and Brooke Baker both had a pair of hits to lead the Bobcats at the plate. Texas State stranded nine players on base, to UTSA's seven.
House pitched the first-two innings, where she allowed five runs in her stint to record the loss. Ashley Wright pitched the final five innings where she fanned a pair of batters. UTSA's Haylee Staton pitched a complete-game shutout with three strikeouts.
Texas State will continue play in the double elimination WAC Tournament tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Bobcats will face the loser of No. 2 New Mexico State and/or No. 3 Louisiana Tech/No. 6 UT Arlington.
