Bobcats Drop to DBU, 12-5

SAN MARCOS, Texas – After going the distance for a 15-inning walk-off win Thursday night, Texas State fell to Dallas Baptist, 12-5, Friday. The Bobcats and Patriots were knotted up, 3-3 after two innings, but DBU opened it up with two runs in the sixth. Texas State answered, but Dallas Baptist responded with four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to even the series before the rubber match on Saturday, Texas State's senior day.
 
Garrett Mattlage paced the Bobcats offensively with a 3-for-4 day, notching an RBI and scoring a run. Ben McElroy was 2-for-4 with a run scored while four others tallied hits on the day. Tyler Pearson notched two RBI on a single up the middle to tie the game, 3-3, in the second. Andrew Stumph and Nick Smelser also picked up RBI in the loss.
 
Dallas Baptist started the game with two runs in the opening inning after a single from right fielder Ronnie Mitchell and Boomer Collins reaching on an error. Both runners scored on a single from DBU's Duncan McAlpine for the early 2-0 lead.
 
Texas State answered with a run from Kevin Sah. He earned a walk and stole his conference-leading 26th base of the season. The speedy outfielder scored from second on a single to left field from Mattlage, the first of three consecutive hits for the shortstop. A double play ended the inning after that for the first of four inning-ending double plays on the day.
 
The Patriots were able to score an unearned run in the second to push the lead to 3-1, but Pearson knocked his two-RBI single to tie it up. After that, both teams only put one base runner on the bags in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
 
In the sixth, DBU started the offense against, scoring two runs. Texas State responded when Mattlage scored on a double down the left line from Stumph. Mattlage was able to get on base with a single to left center.
 
Dallas Baptist took control in the seventh and eighth innings though, scoring seven runs combined while Texas State scored once.
 
Freshman pitcher Justin Dellinger did put in good work in the final inning, striking out two. Steven Keenum also saw time after starter Taylor Black was relieved by Covey Morrow.
 
The Bobcats will try to win the series in the regular season finale at 12 p.m. Saturday. It will also be Texas State's senior day, and six senior Bobcats will be recognized prior to the game.
