Texas State Doomed by Errors in 10-2 Loss to UTA

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas State fell to third place in the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 10-2 loss to UTA Sunday. The Bobcats committed five errors to allow UTA to jump ahead and the Mavericks didn't let up.

Cody Lovejoy led the Bobcats offensively with three hits and two RBI while seven other Bobcats tallied a hit on their way to 10 team hits. UT Arlington also finished with 10 hits, but the Bobcat's five errors proved to be too much to overcome.

UT Arlington was able to jump on the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the first inning. Left fielder Derek Miller reached on an error and went to second base on a wild pitch. Matt Shortall scored Miller from second with a single up the middle.

In the fourth, the Mavericks extended the lead to 3-0 with two runs in the inning. Shortall led off, reaching on an error, and Greg McCall walked. A double to right field from John Twichell scored Shortall, and McCall scored on a Brandon Lawrence groundout.

The Mavericks kept the pressure on in the fifth inning with three more runs. After loading the bases, McCall doubled down the right line to score two runners and grab a 5-0 lead for UTA. Two more walks brought in another UTA run.

Texas State started to threaten in the sixth inning when Morgan Mickan led with a walk and Lovejoy followed with a single through the left side. After two outs, Ben McElroy earned a walk to load the bases, but a groundout ended the opportunity.

UT Arlington continued the onslaught in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs. Disaster struck Texas State with two errors in the inning to bring the game total to five and push the UTA lead to 8-0 with five earned. The Mavericks would finish with seven of their 10 runs earned on the day.

The Bobcats put their only two runs on the board in the seventh inning. Tyler Pearson was hit by a pitch and Kevin Sah doubled down the right line to put both runners in scoring position. A Lovejoy single to left field scored both runners to make it 8-2, but UTA scored a run in both the seventh and eighth inning to spoil any comeback attempt.

Texas State will host No. 17 Rice in the midweek game at 6 p.m. Tuesday before facing Dallas Baptist in the final regular season series on senior weekend.
