Bobcats Make Statement in Series Opening Win

ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas State moved above .500 with a statement win over UT Arlington to break the second place tie in the Western Athletic Conference with a 7-2 victory Friday night. Lucas Humpal stymied the Mavericks for six innings and the Bobcats knocked the UTA pitchers around for 13 hits.
 
Cody Lovejoy led the Bobcats offensively with three hits while Andrew Stumph tallied two RBI on a walk and a hit. He also scored two runs. Morgan Mickan and Garrett Mattlage each had two hits while Mickan scored three runs, and five others registered a hit in the game.
 
Humpal only gave up five hits in 6.1 innings of work. He walked three and let two runs score but struck out five batters. Donnie Hart and Hunter Lemke closed out the game and only gave up one hit combined.
 
The Bobcats made an early statement in Friday night's game, scoring two runs in the opening inning. Kevin Sah led off with a single up the middle and stole his 23rd base of the season. Mickan earned a walk after that, and then Lovejoy moved them both into scoring position on a fly out. Stumph scored Sah with a groundout next, but Mattlage knocked a huge triple to right centerfield to score Mickan and put the Bobcats up 2-0.
 
In the third inning, Stumph led with a walk and went to second on a Mattlage single. The next batter grounded into a double play, but Stumph went to third. A Colby Targun single through the right side scored Stumph to extend TXST's lead to 3-1.
 
Mickan scored Texas State's fourth run of the game in the fourth inning. He reached on a fielder's choice, and then Lovejoy pushed him all the way to third with a single up the middle. Stumph tried to sneak one through the left side and the UTA third baseman ranged over to get it, but bobbled it for an error. Mickan scored on the play for a 4-1 Texas State lead.
 
In the sixth inning Mickan kept it rolling for the Bobcats with a leadoff triple. He scored on the next at bat when Lovejoy hit an infield single. After that, Texas State loaded the bases. Lovejoy scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Smith in a pinch hitting role, and Stumph scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch to push the score to 7-1. The Mavericks were only able to score one more run before Hart and Lemke shut them down at the end.
 
Texas State Taylor Black will take the mound for the Bobcats for a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday. Mitchell Pitts is scheduled to go for the 1 p.m. Sunday game.
