Strong Pitching, Lovejoy Homer Propel Bobcats Past Baylor

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team posted a 3-0 victory over Baylor on Tuesday night to earn its first victory against Bears since March 1, 2011  and the Bobcats' first triumph over Baylor in San Marcos since March 22, 2005.

Andrew Stumph put the Bobcats ahead in the the bottom of the first inning with a RBI single and Cody Lovejoy gave Texas State some breathing room with his first career home run, a two-run shot, to put the Bobcats up, 3-0, in the bottom of the third inning and they never looked back.

Mitchell Pitts started for Texas State and picked up the win in a predetermined three innings. He struck out three and gave up just one hit. In fact, the Bears only tallied two hits through eight innings and tacked one more on in the ninth inning of the three-hit shutout. Austen Williams, Covey Morrow, Lucas Humpal and the closing duo of Donnie Hart and Hunter Lemke all made appearances, combining for just two hits, one walk and eight strikeouts for 11 total on the night. The staff only let one runner to second all night.

“We relieved well, and they did their thing the rest of the way pitching-wise,” said Head Coach Ty Harrington. “I'm very proud of the pitching. It was fun to watch us play defense. It was fun to watch us pitch tonight.”

Texas State snagged the lead  when Kevin Sah started the bottom of the first inning with a walk and the speedy Lovejoy singled on a bunt. Garrett Mattlage moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and Stumph brought Sah in with a single through the left side.

After the Bobcats followed it up with two 1-2-3 defensive innings, Lovejoy added some power with his speed to join the home run club. Sah also scored on the homer to left field after he walked before Lovejoy's at bat.

“To be honest with you, I was just battling out there,” said Lovejoy. “It just happens sometimes. It's an awesome feeling. It's the first one of my college career, so, yeah, I enjoyed it.”

From there, Texas State continued with strong defensive play and the Bears countered with strong plays of their own. After the third inning, Baylor only allowed three hits in the defensive standoff. Neither team let up though, and the Bobcats were able to hold strong throughout the end of the game.

Texas State returns to conference play this weekend with a series at San Jose State. Games are scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
