Texas State Claims First Blood in I-35 Rivalry in 2013

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State used efficient scoring behind the bats of Andrew Stumph, Cody Lovejoy and Kevin Sah and a big three-run double in the sixth inning from Ben McElroy to run over the UTSA Roadrunners, 6-0, Tuesday night.

Texas State improves to 5-7 on the year with the win while UTSA, currently atop the Western Athletic Conference standings, drops to 9-4 on the year.

The scoring started in the fourth when Lovejoy sent a bunt creeping down the first base line for a hit. On the same play, he moved to second on a throwing error by UTSA pitcher Nolan Trabanino, previously undefeated. Lovejoy went to third on a groundout, and then Stumph brought him home with a hit to shallow centerfield. The RBI marked Stumph's 116th career RBI to tie him with David Wood at seventh on the Texas State all-time list.

The Bobcats added another run in the fifth. Third baseman Nick Smelser singled to centerfield and made his way around the bases on a double to the right field edge from Sah.

With a 2-0 lead in the sixth, McElroy broke the game open. Garrett Mattlage and Tyler Pearson each earned a walk on both sides of another Stumph single. With the bases loaded, McElroy sent the ball to deep right centerfield to plate all the base runners and claim a 5-0 Texas State lead. He was the only player to hit for multiple RBIs in the game.

The Bobcats added another run (Pearson) on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.

Meanwhile, the pitching staff stymied the most powerful offense in the WAC. Pitcher Mitchell Pitts was the first to get a crack at the Roadrunners. He struck out two and gave up four hits but did not allow a run, along with the rest of the TXST pitchers for the shutout. He added a smooth snag of a liner at his hip in the third inning.

Covey Morrow picked up the win in 1.1 innings of work while Jeremy Hallonquist, Donnie Hart and Austen Williams combined for three innings, two strikeouts and two hits. Hunter Lemke finished the game with another strong inning for the closer.

The pitching staff finished with four strikeouts against UTSA, but forced the Roadrunners into grounders and fly outs all night. Meanwhile, the Bobcats only struck out three times while putting up eight hits.
