San Marcos, Texas – In a match in which a team doubles point proved pivotal, the Texas State women's tennis team suffered a 4-2 loss against UT Arlington in a Western Athletic Conference match at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.

Texas State's Bérénice Van den Bergh and Monica Pieratt began the day winning the No. 2 doubles match by the score of 8-2.

In the No. 1 match, it appeared that Texas State might win the doubles point when Jessica Kahts and Melissa Hadad won their serve to take a 6-5 lead in the No. 1 match. However, Brook Dennis and Elizabeth Thoms captured three straight points to escape with an 8-6 victory for the Mavericks.

UTA captured the doubles point when Christine Foote and Katar Dikosavljevic beat Mariana Perez and Rachel Baldree, 8-3, in the No. 3 match.

In singles play, Kahts won her No. 1 singles match by the score of 6-2, 6-4 against Dikosavlijevic. The victory improves Kahts' record to 5-0 against WAC opponents this spring. That tied the team score at 1-1, but UTA captured the No. 3 and No. 4 matches to take a 3-1 advantage.

In the No. 3 match, Texas State's Monica Pieratt lost the first set in a tiebreaker against Dennis by a 7-5 score. Dennis came back to win the second set to win the match 7-6, 6-2. In the No. 4 match, Baldree suffered a 6-2, 6-3 setback against Thoms.

Texas State tried to get back into contention when Van den Bergh won her No. 6 match when Foote retired in the third set with Van den Bergh leading 4-1. Foot had won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, before Van den Bergh came back to win the second set 6-4.

However, UTA captured the victory when D'Ortona edged Hadad in three sets by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 after Hadad had fought back from a 6-2 deficit in the third set.

The final match was stopped with Perez leading Liucija Smaizyta, 4-1, in the third set after dropping the first set 6-4 and winning the second 6-3.

Texas State, which fell 6-6 overall and 3-2 against WAC opponents, returns to action on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. when the Bobcats play host to San Jose State at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
