Texas State Women’s Tennis Opens WAC Play With Hard-Fought Match Against Louisiana Tech

The Texas State women's tennis team nearly took down the hottest team in the Western Athletic Conference when the Bobcats suffered a hard-fought 4-3 loss against Louisiana Tech at the Spartan Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.
 
Playing the first of three conference matches in three days in San Jose, the Bobcats played their first-ever WAC match against the Lady Techsters, who came into Thursday's match with a four-match winning streak. 
 
After Louisiana Tech won the doubles team point, the Bobcats came back to win three singles matches and had a fourth decided by a tiebreaker in the second set.
 
Texas State's Jessica Kahts improved her dual match record to 6-2 this spring and her overall record to 16-6 when she posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory over Vivian ten Dolle on the No. 1 court.
 
Rachel Baldree evened her record to 2-2 in No. 4 singles matches this spring with a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 3-2 victory over Melanie Urvoy.
 
Mariana Perez improved to 6-1 in No. 5 singles matches this spring with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Taly Merker.
 
In the other singles matches, Louisiana Tech's Alexandra Starkova defeated Texas State's Melissa Hadad 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 2 match. In the No. 3 match, Joanna Nalborska won a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Texas State's Monica Pieratt. In the No. 6 match, Manoela Chiacchio edged Bérénice Van den Bergh when she had a 7-4 advantage in the tiebreaker to win the second set 7-6 after winning the first set by the score of 6-3 to clinch the victory for La. Tech.
 
 
The Lady Techsters began the day winning all three doubles matches as ten Dolle and Chiacchio defeated Kahts and Hadad, 7-6, in the No. 1 bout.
 
In the No. 2 match, Starkova and Nalborska defeated Pieratt and Van den Bergh by the score of 8-2, while Urvoy and Merker also won the No. 3 match with an 8-4 decision over Perez and Baldree.
 
The loss drops Texas State's record to 4-5 overall this spring, while Louisiana Tech improved to 6-3. The Bobcats return to action on Friday morning when Texas State plays New Mexico State at 11:00 a.m. (CDT). The Bobcats also play Seattle on Saturday after the conclusion of the New Mexico State vs. Louisiana Tech match.
 
Texas State returns home to play WAC conference matches against UT Arlington and San Jose State on at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.  The match versus UTA begins at 3:00 p.m. on March 28 and the San Jose State match starts at 10:00 a.m. on March 31.
