EUGENE, Ore. – After holding tight in Tuesday's game against No. 16 Oregon, the Bobcats suffered four Duck runs in the fourth to bust Wednesday's game open. Eventually, Texas State fell to Oregon, 10-4.
Senior centerfielder
Morgan Mickan was the only Bobcat to finish with multiple hits Wednesday as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Every other batter in the Texas State lineup tallied a hit except for designated hitter
Andrew Stumph. Stumph, however, reached base on a walk. Mickan,
Ben McElroy and
Kevin Sah picked up the only RBI for the Bobcats with one apiece.
Texas State had a strong start to the night, as the Bobcats turned a double play in the first on the way to a three up, three down defensive inning. Then, in the second, Texas State put up three quick runs.
Cory Geisler,
Cody Perkins and Mickan hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Sah notched an RBI when Geisler scored on a Sah fielder's choice. Mickan was thrown out at second. Following that, Sah stole second to put both base runners in scoring position.
After a fly out, Stumph walked to load the bases. The Oregon catcher struggled on the next pitch, and Perkins scored on a passed ball. McElroy picked up another RBI when he sent a single to centerfield to score Sah and give the Bobcats an early 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Ducks closed the gap. With runners at second and third and two outs,
Jeremy Hallonquist balked to plate outfielder Connor Hofmann. Oregon outfielder Scott Heineman scored the next play when Hallonquist threw a wild pitch. The Bobcat pitcher struck out four and gave up four hits and three runs in three innings of work.
Trailing by one run, Oregon put together a four-run inning in the fourth to take control of the gam/e. Without an out, two batters into the inning the Ducks tied the game. The leadoff hitter doubled to left center, and, after the Bobcats moved to
Austen Williams (two hits, two earned runs, one walk, one strikeout), Tyler Baumgartner doubled down the right line to tie it up. After a walk, the Bobcats notched an out on a sacrifice bunt and Williams struck out a batter.
The next Duck, J.J. Altobelli, hit a two-out single to centerfield to score both base runners and claim a 5-3 lead. Oregon wasn't finished as the Ducks would score one more run in the inning. With runners at the corners, Texas State went to
Lucas Humpal on the mound. The next Duck singled off him to score Altobelli and push it to a 6-3 deficit for the Bobcats.
Texas State rebounded with a run in the fifth. Through walks and a
Tyler Pearson single, the Bobcats loaded the bases. Mickan, the senior centerfielder, used his experience to work new Oregon pitcher Sam Johnson for a walk RBI. Unfortunately, the next Bobcat flied out to end the top half of the fifth with Texas State trailing, 6-4.
Oregon started to assert itself with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to push the lead up to 8-4. Two more Oregon runs in the sixth put the game out of reach, 10-4.
Texas State returns home to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Bobcat Ballpark starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday and going into the weekend at 2 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday.
