Baseball Comes Up Just Short In Pitchers Duel, 1-0 To Houston

Box Score

San Marcos, Texas – On a day dominated by pitching, the Texas State baseball team was unable to generate much offense, falling in the tightest of margins, 1-0, Saturday afternoon to Houston at Bobcat Ballpark.

The game was a pitchers' duel for the first six innings as Texas State and Houston combined for just one hit between them. During that stretch Morgan Mickan was able to reach base twice, drawing two of the three free passes the Bobcats earned.

Cody Lovejoy continued his hot approach at the plate from Friday night, reaching base on a hit-by-pitch in the first inning and breaking up the Cougars' no-hitter attempt in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side. He finished the day 1-for-2, making him 4-for-6 in his last two games.

Houston scored its lone run in the second inning when Jonathan Davis doubled to right center bringing home Justin Montemayor from second base. It accounted for the only hit on the afternoon Black allowed.

Texas State starter Taylor Black was dominant much like his first outing in which he shutout Tulane in 7.2 innings of work and struck out seven. This Saturday he allowed just one run on one hit in 7.1 innings and fanned six. The Bobcat pitching staff totaled nine strikeouts on the afternoon, after the bullpen added three of its own in the final 1.2 innings.

The Bobcats will play the series finale on Sunday at noon, looking to clinch the series victory.
