San Marcos, Texas – In a battle of former conference foes, the Texas State women's tennis team fought through the third set of the sixth and final singles match before falling 4-3 against Northwestern State at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Texas State took an early 1-0 lead in the battle when the Bobcats won two of the three doubles matches to capture the team point.
Mariana Perez and Bérénice Van den Bergh began doubles play defeating Daniela Simonova and Amy Williams on the No. 3 court.
Northwestern State's Tatiana Larina and Andrea Nedorostova won an 8-4 decision over
Jessica Kahts and
Melissa Hadad in the No. 1 match.
Texas State won the point when
Gabriela Rojas and
Monica Pieratt defeated Polina Konop and Natalya Krutova by the score of 8-6 in the No. 2 match.
Texas State extended its lead to 2-0 when Perez defeated Williams in straight sets by the score of 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 match.
The Demons answered by winning three straight singles matches to take a 3-2 lead in the team standings. Krutova defeated
Rachel Baldree by the score of 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 3 match.
Then, Larina won the No. 2 match over Hadad by the score of 6-3, 6-1 and Nedorostova edged Pieratt by the score of 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 match.
Texas State came back to tie the team score 3-3 when Kahts won a hard-fought decision over Konop in the No. 1 match. Kahts won the first set, 7-6, after winning the tiebreaker by the score of 7-4. She came back to win the second set by the score 7-5.
In the final singles battle, Simonova won the first set by the score of 6-3 on the No. 6 court.
Katy Collins, who was playing in her first dual match of the season, answered by winning the second set 6-2. However, Simonova came back to win the third set to clinch the victory for the Demons.
The loss gives Texas State a 3-2 overall record this season. The Bobcats will play their next match on Feb. 23 when Texas State plays host to SMU at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
