San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team opened their Western Athletic Conference schedule in impressive fashion as the Bobcats defeated I-35 Maroon-Orange Rival UTSA by the score of 5-2 at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Friday Afternoon.
Texas State captured the team doubles point when
Jessica Kahts and
Melissa Hadad won the No. 1 match and
Gabriela Rojas and
Monica Pieratt won the No. 2 match. Kahts and Hadad began the day with an 8-2 victory over Isabelle Jonsson and Alena Shichkova. Then, Rojas and Pieratt trailed 4-1 before winning five straight points and going on to defeat Jacobea Junger and Daniela Garcia-Diaz by the score of 8-6.
Bérénice Van den Bergh and
Mariana Perez were leading their No. 3 doubles match 6-5 against Natalie Hand and Kavya Menon before it was suspended with a no decision.
In singles action, Pieratt gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead as she overwhelmed Menon by a score of 6-1, 6-3.
Kahts also won a hard-fought No. 1 singles match over Junger by the score of 6-4, 6-4. She trailed 0-2 in the first set before winning three straight points and held on for the victory. She also trailed 2-3 in the second set before winning two straight points before holding serve to win 6-4.
UTSA won their first match of the day when Irene Gandara Gonzalez won a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Van den Bergh on the No. 6 court.
Texas State clinched the team victory when
Rachel Baldree won her No. 3 match over Shichkova by the score of 6-4, 6-3.
In another hard-fought battle, Jonsson won the second match for the Roadrunners when she edged Hadad by the score of 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 2 match.
The final singles match was decided by a third-set tiebreaker as Perez held on to defeated Poile in the No. 5 match. Perez easily won the first set by a 6-0 score, while Poile bounced back to win the second set 6-4. In the third set, Perez jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Poile came back to win four straight points and take a 6-5 lead. However, Perez came back to win tie the score at 6-6 and went on to win the tiebreaker 7-2.
The victory improves Texas State's overall season record to 3-1 heading into Saturday's match against Northwestern State beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. Northwestern State enters the match with a 2-2 overall record after dropping a 6-1 decision at SMU on Feb. 11.
UTSA falls to 3-2 overall, and the Roadrunners will play host to Northwestern State on Sunday.
