Beaumont, Texas – The Texas State volleyball team did not lose a set the entire weekend as the Bobcats wrapped up the Lamar Invitational at McDonald Gym in Beaumont with a three-set victory over Tulane (25-19, 25-21, 25-16). The win was the fourth straight for Texas State.
Senior setter Caleigh McCorquodale was named the tournament MVP, while junior middle blocker Ashlee Hilbun and sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Simms were each selected to the all-tournament team.
For the tournament, McCorquodale led the team to a .261 team hitting percentage while handing out 81 assists for an average of 9.00 assists/set. She also added 26 digs, nine kills with a .318 hitting percentage and two blocks.
Hilbun contributed in all aspects throughout the weekend, finishing with 20 kills, 14 digs, six blocks and two aces.
Simms had a team-high 33 kills during the three-match tournament for an average of 3.67 kills/set. She hit .280 and also contributed four blocks.
The win puts Texas State above .500 for the first time this season at 4-3, while Tulane (1-4) suffered its fourth defeat of the season.
An eight-point run midway through the first set behind the serving of freshman Sierra Smith turned an 11-10 advantage into a 19-10 Texas State lead as the Bobcats went on to close out the opening set 25-19.
In the second set, the Bobcats took an early lead and remained in front the duration of the period. Holding a 20-15 lead, Tulane went on a three-point spurt to cut its deficit to two, but the Bobcats answered with a pair of kills from Amari Deardorff and Smith's third ace of the match to help the team finished the set, 25-21.
The final set closely resembled the second with Texas State taking an early lead and maintaining it throughout. A 16-11 Texas State advantage grew to a 20-12 lead on a kill by Simms before the team used a block and kill late from sophomore Molly Ahrens to close out the victory.
Simms (13 kills, .323 hitting percentage) and Deardorff (10 kills, .421 hitting percentage) led the team offensively, while McCorquodale handed out 33 assists to go along with a team-high 13 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Ahrens posted a match-high six blocks as Texas State held an 8.0-4.0 advantage in that category.
