Texas State Women’s Tennis Defeats Nicholls 6-1

Match Statistics

San Marcos, Texas –
Texas State head women's tennis coach Tory Plunkett entered Friday morning's match against Nicholls with a little concern. But, her team put those concerns to rest when they defeated the Colonels 6-1 at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

“We had lost our confidence a little bit last week (in matches at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA),” said Plunkett. “Nicholls was playing the match down a player and sometimes when teams do that you have a tendency to let up. I was very impressed with the players in how they fought for every single point and didn't let that deter them. They wanted to come out and compete well and I think they did.”

Nicholls went into the match with just five players and Texas State received a point in both singles and doubles play as a result.

The Bobcats captured the team doubles point when they won all three of the matches. Texas State's No. 1 team of Melissa Hadad and Jessica Kahts won their match against Janna Leeuwerik and Parija Maloo by a score of 8-2.
The Bobcats also won the No. 2 doubles match as Gabriela Rojas and Bérénice Van den Bergh defeated Marie Aubert and Catherine Gauthier by a score of 8-3, while Mariana Perez and Rachel Baldree won the No. 3 match by default.

In singles play, Van den Bergh also won the No. 6 match by default, while Mariana Perez won the No. 5 match in dominant fashion with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gauthier.

Rojas won the No. 4 match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ljoshevska to clinch the victory for the Bobcats.

In the No. 2 match, Hadad defeated Leeuwerik in straight sets after coming back from deficits in both sets. In the first set she trailed 2-1 before coming back to take a 3-2 lead. Then, each player held serve until the final game when Hadad broke serve to capture the set by a score of 6-4. In the second set, she trailed 3-2 before winning four straight games to win the second set.

In the No. 1 match, Kahts and Maloo battled back and forth throughout the contest. In the first set, Kahts jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Maloo came back to win the next two games. Each player held serve the rest of the way as Kahts went on to win the set by a score of 6-4.

In the second set, Kahts won the first game to take a 1-0 lead, but Maloo came back to win four straight games. Kahts answered when she won four consecutive games to take a 5-4 lead. However, Maloo won two straight points to regain the lead before Kahts held serve to force a tiebreaker.

In the tiebreaker, Maloo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Kahts scored three straight points when she held her second serve and broke both of Maloo's serves with a double fault. Each player scored a point on the next two serves before Kahts won the final three points when Maloo hit her shots long on each point.

Texas State's victory gives the Bobcats a 12-4 overall record and a 7-1 record against Southland Conference teams. Nicholls falls to 5-11 overall and the Colonels are 1-6 in SLC play.

The Bobcats return to action on Saturday at noon when they play host to Southeastern Louisiana at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. The Lions are 8-7 this season heading into a match at UT Arlington on Friday.
