Bobcat Miscues End Five-Game Winning Streak On Sunday

Texas State could not keep its five-game winning streak alive on Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux, La. as the Bobcats fell 5-2 to Nicholls in the series finale. Miscues doomed the Bobcats who committed five errors, had three baserunners thrown out and left nine runners on base for the game.

 

Despite the loss, Texas State still captured its second straight SLC series after winning Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The team's record now stands at 25-17 overall and 13-11 in the Southland Conference following Sunday's game to put the Bobcats in fourth in the league standings.

 

Texas State took an early lead in the second inning when Andrew Stumph singled down the right field line to bring home Colby Targun for a 1-0 Bobcat advantage. Targun began the inning with a single before swiping second base for his fifth stolen base of the season.

 

Nicholls answered in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1 early before putting up runs in the fourth and sixth inning to jump ahead 4-1.

 

Trailing by three heading to the eighth inning, Texas State's Garrett Mattlage began the inning with a single before moving into scoring position with a stolen base. Two batters later, Casey Kalenkosky singled to bring home the freshman for a 5-2 score. Following a sharp lineout from Targun, Stumph singled to put runners on first and second with two outs. Brooks Orton came up next and singled through the left side but Kalenkosky was thrown out at the plate trying to score to end Texas State's final threat of the game.

 

Bobcat starter Kyle Finnegan was charged with his fourth loss of the season after allowing two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings on the mound. He struck out five and walked two.

 

Texas State had 12 hits as a team for the game but could only manage two runs. Stumph finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Kalenkosky went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Nick Smelser finished 2 for 3 and Mattlage went 2 for 5 with a run scored.

 

The Bobcats went 5 for 5 in stolen base attempts for the game with Mattlage, McVaney, Targun, Orton and Smeler all swiping bags.

 

Michael Suk (6-1) picked up with win for Nicholls despite allowing all 12 Texas State hits on the day. He allowed two runs and struck out five as the Colonels improved to 21-22 overall and 9-15 in the SLC.

 

Texas State returns to San Marcos for its next five straight games, beginning on Friday, May 4 when the team hosts Lamar for the first of a three-game series at Bobcat Ballpark.
