Texas State Women’s Tennis Team Defeats Sam Houston State 5-2

Bryan, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team clinched a second-place tie with UT Arlington in the Southland Conference standings with a 5-2 victory over Sam Houston State on the Bryan High School Courts.

Texas State won four of the six singles matches on Saturday to complete a match that was suspended last Sunday in San Marcos due to rain in the area after the Bobcats had won all three doubles matches to capture the team point.
 
In the No. 1 singles match, Jessica Kahts defeated Imke Jagau in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-1 to improve her SLC record to 9-2 this season.
 
Melissa Hadad also improved to 9-2 in SLC matches this season with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sheridan Currie in the No. 2 match.
 
Gabriela Rojas won her first No. 3 singles conference match and improved to 2-0 overall in No. 3 matches this season after she recorded a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Natalie Petaia. The victory improved her SLC record to 7-4 and 10-7 overall this season.
 
Bérénice Van den Bergh recorded Texas State's fourth victory and improved to 5-1 in SLC No. 6 matches with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Olivia Battye.
 
Sam Houston State won the other two matches with Tatyana Postnikova winning the No. 4 match against Rachel Baldree by a score of 6-2, 6-3 and Nadia Dubyanskaya edging Mariana Perez 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a No. 5 matches.
 
The victory improves Texas State's overall record to 14-5 and the Bobcats own a 9-2 SLC mark. Earlier this season, Texas State defeated the Mavericks to earn the No. 2 seed in the SLC Tournament on April 26-28 in Nacogdoches.
 
Stephen F. Austin, which is ranked No. 45 nationally, won its first-ever regular season title, finishing the season with a 10-1 record in conference play and will play No. 8 UTSA.
 
In a rematch of Saturday's match, Texas State meets Sam Houston State in its first round match at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, while UTA plays No. 6 Lamar, and No. 4 Northwestern State battles No. 5 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the other first round matches.
 
The winners from the opening-round matches will play Friday at 2:00 p.m. for a spot in the tournament championship on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
