Austin, Texas –
For the first time this season, Texas State was held scoreless as the team dropped Tuesday's game against No. 23 Texas, 2-0, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin in front of 6,917 in attendance.

The Bobcats had opportunities early offensively as the team left five runners on base through the first four innings but could not come through with a run.

Texas State starter Taylor Black matched zeros with UT through the first five innings before allowing one run in the sixth and one in the seventh that would prove to be the only runs of the game.

Black (2-1) lost for the first time this season after another strong outing on the mound. The righty tied his career high with seven strikeouts and limited the Longhorns to two runs on six hits over 6 1/3 frames.

Black did not allow a hit through the first 4 2/3 innings, recording seven strikeouts during that span that included 13 straight batters retired at one point. Longhorns' first hit was a single in the fifth inning, but Black was able to work out of the stanza without allowing a run.

In the sixth inning, Black allowed back-to-back hits down the right field line to begin the frame as the home team took a 1-0 lead. The redshirt freshman pitcher was able to limit the damage through as he induced a double-play groundball and another ground out to escape the frame with just a one-run deficit.

Black went out for the seventh inning and recorded one out but also allowed his second run of the game before giving way to Ross Goebel, who was able to get two straight outs to keep the Bobcat deficit at 2-0.

The Bobcats could not get anything going offensively in the latter innings as the team was held without a hit the final six innings of the contest.

Texas State dropped to 20-16 overall with the loss.

UT relief pitcher John Curtiss (1-2) was credited with the win after throwing three scoreless innings. He helped the Longhorns improve their overall record to 21-13 this season.

Freshman Colby Targun had two of the Bobcats' four hits for the game, finishing 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. Tyler Sibley also inched closer to the Texas State career hits record with a 1 for 3 day at the plate, while Garrett Mattlage also went 1 for 3 at the dish.

Senior Jeff McVaney saw his 19-game hitting streak come to an end after an 0 for 4 day.
