Hammond, La. – The Texas State baseball team could not salvage the final game of its three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field in Hammond, La., as the Bobcats were defeated 6-1 to complete the sweep for the Lions.
A pitchers' duel through the first six innings of Sunday's contest, the Lions broke the 0-0 tie in the seventh inning when they scored six runs on six hits, forcing the Bobcats to use four pitchers during the inning. The six-run seventh would be all the scoring for Southeastern Louisiana for the game.
Texas State would be held off the scoreboard until the ninth inning when senior Jeff McVaney hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a solo home run. The shot was his seventh of the season and extended his hitting streak to a season-long 19 games.
Texas State starting pitcher Kyle Finnegan was exceptional through the first six innings of the game. He faced the minimum through the first three innings and allowed just five hits (all singles) through six frames. However, Southeastern Louisiana would put three of the first four batters on base to begin the seventh inning and chase Finnegan from the game.
Finnegan's final line was 6 1/3 innings pitched, seven hits and three runs allowed. The sophomore struck out four as he fell to 4-3 overall this season.
Lions' relief pitcher Dylan Hills improved to 5-2 this season after pitching three scoreless relief innings.
The Bobcats (20-15) lost ground in the Southland Conference standings as the team fell to 8-10 in league play. Texas State is now tied for seventh in the SLC with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Southeastern Louisiana improved to 25-11 overall and 11-7 in the Southland Conference with the win. The Lions are alone in second place in the SLC standings behind Sam Houston State.
As a team, Texas State was able to record just four hits for the game – those coming from McVaney, Casey Kalenkosky, Colby Targun and Garrett Mattlage.
The Bobcats will return to action on Tuesday with the last game of the team's eight-game road trip in Austin against the Longhorns. First pitch at UFCU Disch-Falk Field is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
