San Marcos, Texas – After opening the outdoor season with several personal-bests, the Texas State men's and women's track and field teams will look to post more improvements this weekend, March 23-24, at the Victor Lopez Classic, hosted by Rice University.
Last week at the TCU Invitational, the Bobcat throwers started the season off strong as juniors Chaz Laijas and Jalisa Hall set personal records in the hammer throw. Laijas captured a first-place finish with a mark of 53.63 meters (175-11) while Hall broke her previous career-best by more than 16 feet. On day two of the competition, junior Kelsey Titzman finished with an outdoor personal-best of 14.16 meters (46-05.50) in the shot put, which was her first outing since taking the Southland Conference Indoor title in the event a few weeks prior.
“I think some are where they need to be,” said head coach Dana Boone. “We get the opportunity at Rice this week to improve.”
Also on the field for the Bobcats was senior vaulter Elena Horn, who tied her personal-best in the event with a height of 4.05 meters (13-03.50). Horn's mark is second in the school record books and is less than two inches off from taking over the top spot. In the high jump, sophomore Danielle Candelaria posted a personal-best of 1.70 meters (5-07) for the team's best mark of the 2012 season.
On the track, newcomer Chante'sean White continued her impressive junior campaign as she timed 59.86 in the 400-meter hurdles for the team's fastest time in the event in seven years. On the men's side, school record-holder Charles Grethen began the outdoor season with a runner-up finish in the 800 meters with 1:56.63. On the field for the men, juniors William Murray and Landon Ferguson also took second-place finishes as Murray had a leap of 7.28 meters (23-10.75) in the long jump and Ferguson cleared 4.90 meters (16-00.75) in the pole vault.
“I want to see them excited at what they're doing,” Boone said. “I think we're there physically, but not mentally.”
The Bobcats will begin competition on Friday at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer throw at the Rice University Track Stadium. Competition results for each day will be posted at www.txstatebobcats.com.
