Softball Splits on Opening Day

– The Texas State softball team split on day one of the 2012 season. The Bobcats debuted at the Kajikawa Classic where they fell to Syracuse, 4-0, in game one, and then grabbed a 6-2 victory over BYU in their second game.

In game the opener versus Syracuse, Texas State fell into a hole early and couldn't get out. Syracuse posted a four-run first inning and never relinquished the lead. The first two batters for the Orange used a single and a walk to get on base, before a double to centerfield drove in a pair of runs. Syracuse went on to score four runs on three hits as it was enough to capture the win and keep the Bobcats scoreless. The Bobcats lone hit of the game came from a leadoff single by Haley Lemons in the fourth inning. Chandler Hall suffered the loss, but fanned nine batters in her seven-inning showing.

Game two was much different for the Bobcats as their bats caught a rhythm to connect for 12 hits. It was Brooke Baker who recorded the first hit with a single in the first. Lemons followed next with a bunt, and two batters later Anna Hernandez scored both runners with a single.

Texas State added two more runs in the second and fifth inning to earn the 6-2 victory. Baker and Chandler Hall collected RBIs in the second and Allison Snow and Selena Hernandez were each able to add an RBI in the fifth inning. BYU's pair of runs came in the third inning came on a two-run homer. Anne Marie Taylor earned the win in the circle today with seven strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

The Bobcats will continue play in the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow as it opens the day with a 12:30 p.m. contest versus Cal, followed by a game against Arizona State at 5:30 p.m.
