Game Notes

San Marcos, Texas –
Texas State makes its fifth NCAA Regional Championships appearance when the Bobcats begin action on Friday against No. 24 Kent State at 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin. Texas State, which earned a No. 2 seed in the Austin Regional, and Kent State, the No. 3 seed in the regional, will meet for the first time ever in the regional's opening game.

The Bobcats will go into the Friday afternoon's game with a 40-21 record and five-game winning streak after coming back from an opening round loss to run the table in the Southland Conference Tournament. With 40 wins this season, the team is just one shy of the program's all-time best win total of 41 set in 2009 – the last time the Bobcats went to an NCAA Regional.

Kent State, ranked No.24 in the latest Collegiate Baseball release, will bring a 43-15 record into the weekend. The Golden Flashes have won their last three games and eight of the last 10 as they claimed both the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament crowns.

Friday's pitching matchup should be a good one as the Bobcats will send junior right-hander Carson Smith (9-3, 1.98 ERA) to the mound to face off against senior southpaw Kyle Hallock (10-4, 1.91 ERA). Smith has won his last four decisions and is averaging more than a strikeout per inning this season (124 strikeouts, 104 1/3 innings). For the Golden Flashes, Hallock has 83 punchouts in 99 innings on the mound while holding opponents to a .257 batting average.

The hitting matchup looks to be relatively close between the two teams. On the season, Texas State is hitting .298 as a team, while Kent State is hitting .296. However, the Bobcats have edges in runs scored (423-357), home runs (58-38) and stolen bases (94-48).

The winner of the Texas State/Kent State game will face the winner of the No. 1 seed Texas/No. 4 seed Princeton at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, while the losers of the two games will meet Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in an elimination game.

Fans looking to support the Bobcats as they seek to improve upon their 3-8 record all-time in NCAA Regional play can do so by purchasing tickets and attending Friday's game.
