Conway, Ark. – With the wind blowing straight out on Sunday afternoon, it was no surprise that there was plenty of offense in the game between Texas State and Central Arkansas. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the Bears were able to generate more of it as they defeated Texas State, 13-7, in the series finale at Bear Stadium. The Bears won games two and three of the series to take the season series with against Texas State.
Entering the game 10th in the Southland Conference in hitting, the Bears put 22 runners on base en route to scoring 10 runs. Meanwhile, the Bobcats, who entered the game leading the Southland Conference in hitting during conference play, pounded out 11 hits and four home runs, but it was not enough as the Bobcats fell to 20-11, 11-4 SLC on the season.
With the win, Central Arkansas improved to 15-17 and 5-9 in the Southland Conference this season.
Andrew Stumph, Cory Falvey, Casey Kalenkosky and Jeff McVaney each hit home runs on Sunday as the team brought its team total to a Southland Conference-best 33 this season.
The Bobcats cut into an early 3-0 Central Arkansas lead in the top of the third inning when Tyler Sibley singled to center field to score Joey Fuda from third base. Fuda began the inning with a bunt single before advancing to third base on a wild pitch and subsequent ground out.
The Bears hit their second home run of the series, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 5-1, but the Bobcats used a pair of long balls in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-3. Stumph and Falvey hit back-to-back one-out homers for their fourth and second of the season, respectively.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the fourth inning as Central Arkansas hit a three-run homer to increase its lead to 8-3.
The Bobcats scored for the third consecutive inning in the top of the fifth as Sibley doubled down the left-field line and came home two batters later on a single from McVaney. With the score 8-4, Casey Kalenkosky came up and worked the count full before hitting his conference-leading 12th home run of the season, making the score 8-6 in favor of UCA.
After the Bears scored one in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, McVaney crushed his third home run in the last four games to make the score 10-7 in favor of the Bears.
However, that would be the end of the offense for Texas State as the Bears tacked on three more runs to take the game, 13-7.
The Bobcats return to San Marcos for a five-game homestand beginning on Tuesday, April 12 with a game against Houston Baptist at Bobcat Ballpark.
