San Marcos, Texas –
After averaging more than 11 runs per game over its last five contests, the Texas State baseball team was held scoreless through eight innings before a four-run ninth-inning rally came up short on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark against No. 17 Baylor. The Bears took a 6-4 decision against the Bobcats in front of 1,555 San Marcos fans to end Texas State's seven-game winning streak and even the season series at one apiece.

A two-RBI single from Casey Kalenkosky cut the Baylor lead to three, 6-3, with two outs in the ninth inning, and Jeff McVaney made it 6-4 with an RBI single to bring the winning run to the plate. After Cody Gambill walked to load the bases, Joey Fuda hit a sharp, one-hopper to the second baseman who flipped it to the shortstop for the final out of the game.

Baylor improved to 7-5 overall with the win while Texas state dropped to 9-3 with the loss.

Baylor scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to take a 5-0 advantage. The Bears were able to capitalize with runners on base as they used seven singles and a double during the three-inning stretch to take the five-run lead.

The Bobcats had golden opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the fourth and sixth innings but could not push a runner across the plate.

In the fourth, Tyler Sibley doubled down the left field line to start the inning, and two batters later, Kyle Kubitza walked to put two on with one out. Following a balk on Baylor's Kolt Browder that moved both runners into scoring position, the Bobcats were unable to plate a run as Browder induced a strikeout and pop out to end the threat.

In the sixth, Sibley again led off the inning with a hit before Texas State eventually loaded the bases. However, Baylor was again able to work out of the jam to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard.

After the Bears put up a solo run in their half of the eighth, the Bobcats again put two runners on base in their half of the inning but were unable to score as the team left 12 runners on base for the game.

Sibley recorded three hits for the Bobcats as he finished 3-for-5 with a run scored. Kalenkosky was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and McVaney finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Lee Colon (1-1) was charged with the loss after going 4 1/3 innings for the Bobcats. The senior struck out seven Bears and allowed two earned runs as he evened his record on the season.

Jon Ringenberg (1-0) earned the victory for the Bears after leaving the game without giving up a hit in three innings on the mound.

The Bobcats return to the field on Friday, March 11 when the team begins a three-game weekend series against Houston. Game one of the series at Bobcat Ballpark will begin at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, contact the Texas State Athletic Ticket Office.
