Beaumont, Texas – The Texas State baseball team got another strong start from sophomore Colton Turner and the Bobcat offense put together a pair of big innings as the team defeated Lamar, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont. The Bobcats won two-of-three at Lamar over the weekend to capture their fifth series win of the season.
Turner pitched his longest outing of his career as he went 7 1/3 innings, while allowing just five hits and one earned run. Turner struck out four and walked just one as he became the only pitcher in the Southland Conference to sport a 5-0 record. Turner, a southpaw from Joshua, Texas, lowered his season ERA to 3.18 after Sunday's performance.
Joseph Dvorsky came pitch the final 1 2/3 innings in relief with two strikeouts to earn his sixth save of the season.
Jeff Abt (0-1) made his first start of the season for Lamar and was charged with the loss after throwing 5 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out two.
Texas State (17-6, 8-1 SLC) remain atop the Southland Conference standings with the win, and Lamar, the defending Southland Conference Tournament champions, dropped to 17-10 overall and 6-3 in the SLC.
A pair of fine defensive plays from the Bobcats helped keep Lamar off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. With one out and runners on first and second, Lamar's Jeff Abt pulled a ball down the right field line that first baseman Casey Kalenkosky gloved to rob Abt of an RBI extra-base hit. Lamar nearly got on the scoreboard as the next Cardinal hit a dribbler just past the mound that shortstop Isaac Nuti charged and barehanded to get the Lamar batter by a step at first base.
After four scoreless innings, Lamar pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to put the Cardinals in front, 1-0.
Texas State would answer in the top of the sixth when Tyler Sibley's one-out single turned out to be the first of four consecutive hits that helped three runs cross the plate for a 3-1 Bobcat lead. Bret Atwood followed Sibley with a single to left field before Kyle Kubitza doubled to the wall to bring home both Sibley and Atwood. After an infield single from Kalenkosky, Jeff McVaney hit a liner to left-center field which the Lamar center fielder Ted Zentek made a diving catch on to keep McVaney off the bases, but Kubitza was easily able to score on what proved to be a sacrifice fly for the third run of the inning.
The 3-1 score would remain until the ninth inning when Joey Fuda led off the inning with a double over the head of the center fielder, and three batters later, Cory Falvey tripled over the head of the right fielder to bring home Fuda for a 4-1. Atwood and Kubitza followed with RBI singles to make the score 6-1 before Kalenkosky launched his SLC-leading ninth home run of the season to make the score 9-1.
Lamar strung together four hits in the bottom of the ninth to push four runs across the plate, but Dvorsky was able to get out of the inning with a 9-5 Texas State victory.
Texas State will have the next two days off before returning to Bobcat Ballpark for a game against Missouri on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Texas State Athletic Ticket Office or at the gate of Bobcat Ballpark.
