Denton, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to Northwestern State in a Southland Conference match on Friday afternoon at the UNT Tennis Complex. The two teams faced each other on neutral courts at the University of North Texas to make up a rained out match in Natchitoches on March 5.
The highlight for Bobcats in the match was the play of sophomore Melissa Hadad, who won her No. 2 singles match in three sets over Adna Curukovic and teamed with Jessica Kahts in the No. 1 doubles match that was decided by a tiebreaker.
In the singles match, Curukovic won the first set 6-1 before Hadad bounced back to capture the second set 6-3. Hadad also won the third-set tiebreaker 10-7 to score Texas State's only team point in the dual match.
In the top doubles bout, Hadad and Kahts fought to a 7-7 tie before Curukovic and Olga Bazhanova won the tiebreaker by a 7-3 score.
Texas State also lost the other two doubles matches by scores of 8-1 each as Gabriela Rojas and Berenice Van Den Bergh fell to Andrea Nedorostova and Martina Rubesova in the No. 2 match, with Jessica Laing and Mariana Perez falling to Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schultz.
In singles action, Kahts suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback to Bazhanova in the No. 1 match. Rojas also suffered a hard-fought 6-1, 6-04 loss to Rubesova in the No. 3 match, while Schulz edged Laing 6-4, 6-4.
In the No. 5 singles match, Perez lost a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Nedorostova and Van Den Bergh suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss against Lange.
With the loss, Texas State falls to 6-5 overall and the Bobcats are 2-2 against Southland Conference teams heading into Saturday's conference match at UT Arlington on Saturday morning.
