San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State baseball team will wrap up its seven-game homestand to begin the 2011 season with three games against Akron this weekend at Bobcat Ballpark. The Bobcats are scheduled to take on the Zips at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
The Bobcats enter the weekend series following a one-run loss against No. 18/22 Rice on Wednesday that evened the team's record at 2-2 overall. Akron visits San Marcos with a 1-3 mark and having lost its last three games. The Zips played Southland Conference-member Lamar twice on opening weekend and went 1-1 against the Cardinals.
Junior Mitchell Pitts (1-0, 1.50 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener for the Bobcats, while Andrew Brown (1-0, 0.00) will get the nod for Akron. On Saturday, sophomore Colton Turner (1-0, 3.60) will make his second career start against the Zips' Alex Loftin (0-1, 6.75). In the series finale, senior Lee Colon (0-0, 18.00) will take on Zach Yike (0-1, 16.88) from Akron.
Senior Bret Atwood and junior Tyler Sibley enter the weekend with nine game hitting streaks intact dating back to last season. Both players are in the top-10 in the Southland Conference in hitting with batting averages of at least .500 to begin the season. The duo has helped set the table for a Texas State offense that is averaging 8.5 runs per game this season.
Friday's contest will mark the first game between Texas State and Akron. The Bobcats also had first-time matchups against Missouri State and Air Force earlier this season.
Tickets for each game can be purchased through www.TxStateBobcats.com/tickets, by calling the Texas State Athletics Ticket Office at 245-2272, at the Texas State Athletic Ticket Office located in the Darren B. Casey Athletic Administration Complex or at the gate.
