Thibodaux, La. – The Texas State volleyball team hit a milestone on Thursday evening as the Bobcats captured the team's 1,000th victory in the program's history at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux, La. Texas State improved to 10-1 in four-set matches this season after taking the match by scores of 25-12, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18.
One match after watching their 11-game winning streak come to an end, the Bobcats extended their winning streak during Southland Conference play to 12 matches in improving to 21-7 overall and 12-1 in league action. The SLC winning streak is the team's longest since 2004 when the Bobcats also rattled off 12 straight conference wins.
Texas State has now won 10 consecutive matches against Nicholls and pulled even in the SLC West Division with UTSA, which fell to Sam Houston State on Thursday night for its first loss of the season in conference play.
The 1,000th win comes in the 45th year of the volleyball program that began in 1967, meaning that Texas State has averaged more than 22 wins per season. Head coach Karen Chisum has been around for nearly three-quarters of those victories as she now has 737 career wins, the sixth most of any active NCAA Division I head coach.
“It's a tribute to every young lady who has been a part of this program and played Bobcat volleyball,” Chisum said. “This is the group that gets to reap the recognition for it, but there have been many team efforts that have led to this. Tonight it was a true team effort as well.”
Past Bobcat head coaches who helped the program to this milestone include Susan Duke, Patti Barrett, Karen Fredenburg and Chris Mayhew.
During Thursday's match, the Bobcat offense was led by senior Amber Calhoun who had a career high 17 kills. The middle blocker finished the match with a .483 hitting percentage on 29 attempts, increasing her career hitting percentage to .321, 10 points shy of taking over lead for career hitting percentage.
She was joined in double figures in kills by senior Lindy DeGeare with 14 and sophomore Amari Deardorff with 12.
As a team, the Bobcats hit .333 for the match, more than .150 points higher than the Colonels who posted a .174 hitting percentage. The offense was guided for the majority of the night by junior Caleigh McCorquodale who had 45 assists along with 15 digs for her team-leading 12th double-double of the season.
Defensively, McCorquodale's 15 digs were a team high, while freshman Laura Whalen added 12 and junior Danielle Sanchou had nine.
At the net, Calhoun and Deardorff both finished with five blocks to tie for the team lead. Calhoun's four block assists put her within 13 of breaking the career record at Texas State.
