Nine Bobcats Receive Texas State Bobcat Club Academic Ring

Nine Bobcats received their Bobcat Club Academic Ring as part of the 2010 Summer Graduation Commencemnt on Friday.
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS- Nine Texas State student-athletes who received the Bobcat Club Academic Ring as part of the Summer Graduation Commencement exercises that were held Friday.
 
Football players Alvin Canady, Michael Schneeweis and Joe Bell joined softball player Ali McCormack, women's track and field athletes April Murphy and Kelli Van Vleet, volleyball player Jessica Weynand, baseball player Jordan Kopycinski and soccer player Rikki Padia.
 
Canady was an Honorable-Mention All-Southland Conference selection after leading Texas State in rushing with 546 yards and nine touchdowns on 128 carries as a senior campaign in 2009. He also caught 33 passes for 287 yards and another TD.
 
Bell recorded 63 tackles for Texas State in nine games at middle linebacker during the 2009 campaign. He made seven starts for the Bobcats and missed two games with injuries.
 
Schneeweis started the last six games at left guard for the Bobcats and helped Texas State finish the campaign with a 5-1 record. A two-year letterman for the Bobcats, he was part of an offensive line that was ranked among the Top 25 FCS national polls each of the past two years and was a member of the Top 20 offensive lines in the country both seasons as well.
 
Weynand was an All-Southland Conference First-Team selection and a member of the SLC All-Tournament team after leading the Bobcats to the 2009 SLC Tournament championship. She also ended her career ranked among Texas State's Top 10 career leaders in kills with 1,215 during the last four seasons.
 
McCormack played in 29 games and made 12 starts for Texas State's 2008 softball team that won the SLC regular season and tournament championships. She hit one home run and drove in 10 runs for the Bobcats as a senior.
 
Padia earned four letters for the soccer team from 2005-08. As a senior, she helped the Bobcats finish the regular season with a 7-0-2 record to win the SLC championship. Texas State also won the 2008 SLC Tournament.
 
VanVleet was a two-year letterwinner for the women's track and field team while competing in the javelin in 2008 and 2009.
 
Murphy was a three-year letterwinner for Texas State's cross country team and ran the middle distance races for the track and field squad.
 
The Texas State Bobcat Club Academic Ring symbolizes excellence on the playing field and in the classroom. The Texas State Department of Athletics initiated the Ring Ceremony program in May 1986. Since the inception of the program, more than 750 student-athletes have received the Texas State Bobcat Club Academic Ring. To receive this symbol of academic and athletic achievement, student-athletes must have:
 
1. Received the “T” Letter from the Texas State Department of Athletics;<br>
2. Completed NCAA eligibility with Texas State;<br>
3. Earned an undergraduate degree from Texas State within one year after NCAA eligibility has been completed. <br>
 
Along with their ring, all graduating athletes also receive a maroon and gold cord to wear during commencement exercises. Initiated by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in December 2008, the cords serve to recognize student-athletes as a unique group on campus.
 
The ring and the graduation cord are dedicated to the student-athletes who have contributed their efforts on the field of play and balanced those efforts with a commitment to achieving excellence in the classroom.
