SAN MARCOS, Texas – Saturday saw Texas State (27-20, 10-13 Sun Belt) drop its third straight game as South Alabama (29-18, 13-10 Sun Belt) came away with a 6-4 victory at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark.
Â
Cade Smith (3-2) took the loss after going just 2.2 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits in his first start at home since entering the rotation. Tyler Smith (1-0) threw six scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while striking out five coming out of the bullpen to pick up the win.
Â
Throwing two shutout frames with three punch outs was
Kyle Froehlich. Working 3.1 innings of relief was
Alec Beversdorf while
Dylan Kerbow threw one inning out of the bullpen.
Â
Going 2-for-4 at the plate was
Bennett Fryman,
Clayton Namken and
Manny Salas. Namken drove in three runs and scored twice. Also driving in a run was Fryman.
Â
The Jaguars opened the game with a three-run first inning that was aided by two Bobcat errors.
Â
In the bottom of the inning,
Rashawn Galloway led off by drawing a walk and Salas followed with a single back up the middle. A ground out allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Namken took advantage and sent the first pitch he saw back up the middle for a two RBI single and a throwing error also allowed him to advance to second.
Â
The very next pitch saw Fryman send it to right field. The ball nearly left the yard but hit off the wall for an RBI single to tie the game.
Â
South Alabama retook the lead in the next frame on a throwing error on a potential inning-ending double play. The visitors added to their lead with another run in the third to go up 5-3.
Â
With one gone in the bottom of the third, Namken sent a 2-0 offering 392 feet to left field for his fifth home run of the season. It also cut the deficit to a run.
Â
That would be as close as TXST would get as the offense was stifled for the final six innings. The Jaguars would tack on the final run of the contest in the seventh.
Â
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 11:30 a.m. first pitch.
