Texas State Drops Extra-Inning Contest

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Texas State (25-15, 9-9 Sun Belt) was able to tie the game in the ninth to send Sunday's series finale to extra-innings. However, it would be Southern Miss (27-13, 11-7 Sun Belt) coming away with a 5-4 victory in 10 innings at Pete Taylor Park.

Picking up the win was Thomas Crabtree (1-2) after throwing a scoreless 10th frame. Alizaeh Gutierrez (2-1) recorded one out but surrendered the winning run to take the loss.

Kyle Froehlich threw five innings of relief with eight strikeouts and allowed one run on three hits. Getting the start was Jesus Tovar, who gave up three runs on five this and four walks in the first four innings of the game.

A trio of Bobcats finished with two hits in Ethan Farris, Dawson Park and Justin Vossos. Both Chase Mora and Park drove in two runs apiece while Farris and Vossos each scored twice.

The Golden Eagles would strike first with two runs the first time at the plate. They would add another run in the fourth to extend their advantage to 3-0.

With two outs in the fifth, Farris and Vossos hit back-to-back singles. Mora followed by sending a 2-2 pitch to left center for a double that plated two runs.

Farris worked a free pass with one out in the seventh and advanced to second on a hit-and-run groundout. The frame would be extended when Mora reached bases on a throwing error by the USM shortstop to put runners on the corners. After a pitching change, Park laced the first pitch to him to center for an RBI single to tie the game.

The Eagles retook the lead when Matthew Russo led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to right centerfield.

Vossos reached base in the ninth via a single. With two outs, Park smacked a 1-0 pitch past the third baseman and all the way to the wall for a double that scored Vossos from first to again tie the game.

USM had a chance to win the contest in the bottom of the ninth but Froehlich grounded out to Park to leave runners on the corners. The hosts would score the winning run in the next inning on a wild pitch.

Next up for TXST is a Tuesday home game against UIW with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
