SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (12-3) battled to a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon over Washington State (6-9). The win clinched the four-game series over the future Pac-12 Conference members.
Â
Continuing his dominance on the mound was
Jesus Tovar (4-0). The lefty threw six innings with seven strikeouts and gave up just one run on four hits to earn the win.
Wade Cooper recorded the final three outs to earn his fourth save of the year. Taking the loss was Gavin Derr (0-1) after he allowed two runs on three hits and walks in three innings.
Â
Also seeing action on the rubber for the Bobcats was
Alec Beversdorf. He struck out three in two innings while surrendering two runs on four hits.
Â
Dawson Park lone hit of the afternoon was a two-run home run and marked his third consecutive game hitting a long ball. The lone player with multiple hits was
Brady Boles with two. Both he and
Rashawn Galloway drove in a run apiece.
Â
In the second,
Manny Salas started the frame by working a free pass. Park followed by sending a 3-2 pitch 395 feet to left center for his third homer of the year.
Â
Neither team got on the scoreboard again until the fifth. The Cougars tallied a run in the frame on a single by Trevor Smith that ended Tovar's shutout streak at 23.2 innings.
Â
Galloway would put TXST back in front by two in the bottom of the frame. He hit a hard grounder to left center that saw him hustle around to second for a double that brough home
Austin Munguia.
Â
The seventh began with WSU single to left field. Back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases for the visitors. Trevor Smith hit a 1-0 pitch to left field that nearly left the yard. Instead, the ball hit off the wall and bounced right to
Jaquae Stewart. He was able to get the ball in quickly to allow just a run to score.
Â
Max Hartman reached on a fielder's choice that plated a run and cut Texas State's lead to 4-3.
Â
With two gone in the ninth, back-to-back hit by pitches gave the Cougars some hope of tying or taking the lead. Cooper denied them by inducing a grounder to Boles to wrap up the contest.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting at home with 3rd-ranked Texas on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
