Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Friday saw Texas State (10-3) and Washington State (6-8) split a doubleheader at Bobcat Ballpark. The Cougars claimed the first game 9-7 and the Bobcats won the night cap 10-4.
 
Game 1
Earning the win on the rubber was Kaden Wickersham (1-0) after recording two outs in relief. Scott Rienguette threw the final 2.2 innings with four strikeouts to record his second save of the season. Take the loss was Titan Targac (1-2) as he allowed three runs on two walks and one hit while recording just one out.
 
Kyle Froehlich struck out five in five innings but gave up five runs on six hits in his fourth start of the season. Alizaeh Gutierrez tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and Shane Connell struck out two in an inning of work.
 
At the plate, Rashawn Galloway went 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs and two doubles. Dawson Park also drove in three runs on his first home run of the season. Also with two base knocks were Brady Boles and Chase Mora.
 
The Bobcats struck first with two runs in the first on a double from Galloway and when Salas reached base via a fielder's choice. They would go up 5-1 after the third when Dawson hit a three-run homer.
 
In the top of the fourth, Ryan Skjonsby doubled down the right field line to plate a run. Alexandre Giguere followed two batters later with a three-run round tripper to left center to tie the game.
 
Austin Munguia doubled in the bottom of the frame and advanced to third on a hard-hit single by Jackson Cotton. Galloway brought Munguia home one a slow chopper to the third baseman to put TXST back in front.
 
The score stayed the same until the seventh when the Cougars scored three runs, two of which came via wild pitches. They would tack on an insurance run in the top of the eighth.
 
Galloway drove in this third run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth with a single to left center.
 
Game 2
Alex Yearwood (1-0) had an outstanding performance out of the bullpen with 2.2 perfect innings of work with a career-high six strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win. Griffin Smith (1-2) allowed five runs in six innings on six hits to take the loss.
 
Starting on the rubber for Texas State was Nolan Moore, who threw two shutout frames before having to leave the game due to an injury. Keller Eberly and Cameron O'Banan each tossed a scoreless inning while Braylen Timmins saw three of his four outs coming via a strikeout.
 
Galloway finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, two runs and hit one double. Clayton Namken also went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Both of his base knocks were for extra-bases with a home run and double.
 
Manny Salas plated four runs, Park drove in two runs and both hit a homer.
 
Texas State struck first again with a solo long ball from Namken in the third. The score remained the same until Cam Macleod hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth to tie the game.
 
With runners at the corners in the sixth, Salas hit a deep sacrifice fly to left to drive in a run. The very next pitch saw Park crush it 430 feet to centerfield for a two-run home run.
 
The Bobcats put the game away in the seventh with a six-run frame. Salas drove in half the runs as the left-handed hitting batter hit an opposite field home run. Galloway hit a two-run double and Namken plate one with a double down the left field line.
 
WSU wrapped up the scoring with three runs in the ninth.
 
Saturday's series finale is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
