MONROE, La. – An early offensive explosion by ULM (12-9, 3-0 Sun Belt) was too much for Texas State (12-7, 0-3 Sun Belt) to overcome as the Warhawks won the series finale 16-5 in seven innings Sunday afternoon from Lou St. Amant Field.
Going the distance on the rubber and claiming the victory was JC Dermody (4-0) as he struck out six and gave up five runs on 11 hits.
Jesus Tovar (4-1) suffered the loss after only retiring one batter and surrendering seven runs on four hits and two walks.
Wade Cooper struck out five in 3.2 innings in relief. Also seeing action out of the bullpen was
Colby Diaz,
Dylan Kerbow,
Titan Targac and
Cade Smith.
Both
Jackson Cotton and
Dawson Park went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Ausitn Munguia finished 2-for-3 with two runs and hit a double. Also driving in a run was
Ethan Farris.
The first seven batters of the game for the Warhawks reached base and they sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs.
Munguia led off the third with a ground-rule double and would come home when Cotton singled down the right field line to put TXST on the scoreboard. ULM would answer back with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning.
Cotton drove in his second run of the contest with a double down the right field line in the fifth. Park would beat out an infield single later in the frame to bring in another run. The Warhawks responded right back with three runs in the next half inning to go up 12-3.
Farris hit a 2-1 pitch 400-foot blast to center field in the sixth for his first collegiate homer. The final run of the game for Texas State came in the seventh when Park doubled to left center that brought home
Tanner Carson.
The Warhawks would score once in the sixth and three more in the seventh to end the game early due to the run-rule.
Next up for TXST is a trip to College Station to take on Texas A&M on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
