CLEBURNE, Texas – Another outstanding performance on the mound from
Jesus Tovar helped Texas State (9-2) defeat Abilene Christian (6-5) 3-0 Sunday afternoon at La Moderna Field. The victory clinched the inaugural College Baseball Series in Cleburne, Texas title for the Bobcats.
Â
Tovar (3-0) threw six shutout innings, recorded a season-high seven strikeouts and held the Wildcat hitless.
Titan Targac tossed the final three innings with four strikeouts to earn his first career save. Colin McGarrh (1-1) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in three innings while punching out seven.
Â
Manny Salas went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. His performance over the weekend saw him be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Â
Also recording a base hit for the Bobcats were
Jackson Cotton,
Rashawn Galloway,
Dawson Park and
Jaquae Stewart.
Â
With one out in the first, Galloway singled through the left side of the infield. Stewart followed with another single that went through the right side of the infield. A 2-1 offering to Salas was sent over the left field wall for his second home run of the season and gave the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Those would be the only runs of the game as TXST was limited to just three hits for the rest of the game.
Â
ACU would not get its first hit of the game until Zack Payne led off the eighth with a hard shot to right center for a single.
Brady Boles made a leaping attempt to catch it but the ball flew just past his glove.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a four-game series against future Pac-12 Conference foe Washington State. The first game is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. from Bobcat Ballpark.
