Duron, Parra Sweep Sun Belt Women's Athlete of the Week Awards

SAN MARCOS, Texas— Seniors Melanie Duron and Abigail Parra swept the Sun Belt Conference Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors following standout performances at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station.

Duron was named the Sun Belt Field Athlete of the Week after winning the women's shot put with a mark of 16.58 meters. The throw ranks fifth all-time in the Texas State record book and currently stands first in the Sun Belt. Fellow Bobcat Sophia Haberer sits second in the conference rankings.

Duron's mark also ranks 17th nationally this season and leads the South Central Region, sitting first among athletes from 40 schools.

Parra earned Track Athlete of the Week honors after placing third in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 9:29.24, setting a new Texas State program record. Her performance shattered the previous school record by 11.33 seconds, one of the largest improvements in program history.

Parra's time ranks first in the Sun Belt, with a 15.24-second gap over second place, and currently sits sixth in the South Central Region.

The pair are coming off dominant 2025 indoor seasons, where they helped lead Texas State to the 2025 Sun Belt Women's Indoor Championship and both earned All-Sun Belt honors.

Duron collected All-Sun Belt First Team recognition after winning the shot put at the conference meet with a personal-best throw of 18.21 meters, which finished the indoor season as the ninth-best mark in the nation.

Parra earned All-Sun Belt Second Team honors after finishing second in both the 800 meters and the mile at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships. Her 800-meter time ranked fifth-fastest in program history, while her mile performance ranked second. She also placed third as part of the distance medley relay team that set a school record (11:39.61).

Duron and Parra will look to continue building momentum as the Bobcats pursue another Sun Belt indoor title.

Texas State returns to action Feb. 6–7 when they travel to College Station to compete at the Charlie Thomas Invitational.
