WEST COVINA, Calif. – In its first day of competition in California, the Texas State track and field team had a dominating day on the West Coast. The Bobcats had five athletes finish in the top 3 of their events, one athlete break a school record and one athlete record an NCAA No. 1 mark.
Leading the throws squad at the Pacific Coast Invitational was sophomore hammer thrower
Lara Roberts. Roberts recorded a mark of 70.34 meters to win the event and became the only athlete in the NCAA this season to record a mark over 70 meters. Her mark leads the NCAA and registered as the eighth-best throw in school history.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, freshman
Nyomi Garcia broke a 12-year-old school record in the women's 5,000 meters, when she recorded a time of 16:43.43 and placed 12th overall. Her debut mark in the 5,000 is the fastest time in the Sun Belt Conference this season.
Fellow freshman
Henok Hagos also shined at the Bryan Clay Invite as he recorded the second-best time in school history for the men's 5,000 (14:13.19) and now sits fourth in the SBC.
The third freshman to have an impressive performance was
McKenah Sears in the women's javelin throw. At the Mt. SAC Relays, Sears recorded a PR mark of 48.63 meters, which is the second-best mark in the SBC and the fourth best in TXST history.
Back in Long Beach at the Pacific Coast Invite,
Henry Buckles and
Melanie Duron both found the podium in their respective shot put events. In the men's event, Buckles recorded a mark of 18.31 meters to place second, and in the women's, Duron placed third with a mark of 16.41 meters.
Connor Warzecha ended the night for Texas State at the Mt. SAC Relays in the men's javelin. Warzecha recorded a mark of 62.59 meters and placed third overall.
The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow in California at the Mt. SAC Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational, while the athletes who did not travel will compete in the Michael Johnson Invite in Waco, Texas.
