MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – Texas State's
Sakke Siltala and
Jaxon Donaldson finished in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard to lead the Bobcats at the season-opening Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate held at Grande Dunes Golf Resort Club.
As a team, Texas State finished the event 3-over in ninth place (291-290-286--867) after firing its tournament best 2-under in the event's final round. Santa Clara won the event, while Campbell and East Carolina rounded out the top three in order.
"This was an up and down week for us," said head coach
Shane Howell. "We had some good performances from several of the guys, but as a team we couldn't quite put together a proper team round. A lot for us to learn from and be better next tournament out."
Siltala went 1-under on the final 18 to complete the tournament at 3-under (71-71-71—213), a score which featured all three rounds under par.
The biggest mover on the leaderboard for TXST Tuesday was newcomer Donaldson who carded a team-best round for the tournament of 68 to jump 18 spots and conclude his first collegiate tournament tied for 19th at 2-under (73-73-68—214).
"I was impressed with freshman
Jaxon Donaldson's play in his first tournament," added Howell. "He showed a lot of grit and played a great final round."
Jack Burke finished even over 54 holes (70-71-75—216), which was good for a tie for 27th. The senior registered a team-best 13 birdies at the event, the fifth highest number for an individual.
Enzo Dakiche and
Joel Talusen finished tied for 69th and tied for 75th, respectively, to complete the TXST lineup.
