LUBBOCK, Texas – Daniel Harrold and
Dominick Yancy both set school records on day one of the Jarvis Scott Open. Harrold set the record in the men's 60-meter hurdles for the second week in a row, when he recorded a 7.65 in the finals and placed second overall. This time places Harrold tied for fifth nationally. In the prelims of the event, Harrold tied his previous school record of 7.68.
Yancy set the new school record for the men's 400 meters, when he recorded a time of 45.85 and placed first overall. Nationally speaking, Yancy is now ranked seventh and sits first in the Sun Belt Conference.
In the Women's weight throws,
Utitofon Sam placed first with a mark of 18.84m/61-9.75. In the second section of the women's weight throw,
Lara Roberts placed first with a throw of 18.41m/60-4.75, which broke her previous PR by over a meter.
Continuing the success on the women's side was
Matilde Poli in the pole vault. Poli recorded a vault of 3.63m/11-10.75 and placed third overall.
Coming off being named the Sun Belt Women's Track Athletes of the Week,
Taejha Badal continued her success in the 60 meters by setting a PR in the event's prelims with a time of 7.39. This mark has her ranked first in the Sun Belt Conference and she is the only athlete this year to go below 7.40. She placed sixth in the finals, with a time of 7.45.
Taahir Kelly set the fifth-best time in school history for the men's 400 meters, when he recorded a time of 47.00. Kelly placed eighth in the event and now sits second behind Yancy in the Sun Belt rankings. Brain West now sits third behind Kelly and Yancy in the SBC rankings after posting a 47.39 in the 400 meters tonight.
The Texas State track and field team is back in action tomorrow for day 2 of the Jarvis Scott Open. The meet begins with the field events at 10 a.m. and the running resumes at 11 a.m.
