Runarsdottir Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships in Hammer Throw

The freshman finished 9th at the NCAA West Prelims

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For the second day in a row, a Texas State freshman punched their ticket to the 2023 NCAA Championships as Elisabet Runarsdottir advanced out of the NCAA West Prelims in the women's hammer throw on Thursday at Hornet Stadium.

Runarsdottir, a freshman from Iceland, threw 63.75 meters/209-2 in her final attempt to finish ninth in the field of 48. The top 12 advanced to the NCAA Championships. She is the second women's hammer thrower in school history to advance to the national meet and first Texas State female freshman in any event to accomplish that feat since 2005.

Runarsdottir was in 10th after her first attempt went 62.83 meters/206-1, but she moved up one spot with her final throw. She has thrown 63 or more meters five times this season.

She joined freshman long jumper Chris Preddie as the NCAA Championships qualifiers so far for the Bobcats.

Sedrickia Wynn put herself in position to possibly advance as well as the redshirt senior qualified for the quarterfinals on Saturday in three different events. She finished seventh in the first round of the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.07, which was a new school record. Wynn also placed 12th in the first round of the 100 meters (11.36) and 13th in the 200 meters (23.12). She was well within the top 24 in each event that advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals.

Freshman Melanie Duron fell short of advancing to the NCAA Championships after finishing 18th in the women's shot put. She threw 16.43m/53-11, which was less than three feet shy of cracking the top 12.

Texas State returns to action on Friday with the men's team aiming to punch six tickets to the NCAA Championships. The first event featuring a Bobcat starts at 4:30 pm CT (Aiden Hayes, men's high jump) while the running events get started with the men's 4x100 relay (7 pm CT).
