SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior
Davis Powell and
Peyton Zabel had strong performances at the plate and on the mound, respectively, Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark in helping Texas State (27-15) to a 7-2 win over Prairie View A&M (16-24).
Â
"Thought tonight was okay. Offensively, we had some barrels in there but at times we weren't getting our swings off in time and trying to play a bit defensive. Once we started to get it going it was pretty good," said head coach
Steven Trout. "
Davis Powell had a really good night on offense and defense. Rashawn [Galloway] had a good night and it was great to see Daylan [Pena} hit an oppo bomb."
Â
Zabel (2-1) recorded his first career quality start as he tossed six scoreless innings with three strikeouts while allowing just four hits on his way to earning the win. Kyle Carrick (0-3) took the loss as he surrendered three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.
Â
"I thought Zabel threw the ball well. For him, this was another really good moment for him. We will need to have him with a couple of midweek games left," said Trout. "Then in the conference tournament, to win it you need to win four or five games. He is going to be one of those guys that will need to start a game for us."
Â
Cameron Bush struck out two in two innings and
Triston Dixon retired the final three batters of the game.
Â
Powell finished 4-for-5 at the dish with three RBI, two runs and hit a solo home run.
Daylan Pena finished with two RBI that included a solo long ball as well. Continuing his hot performance with the bat was
Rashawn Galloway. The freshman finished the night with three base knocks.
Â
Both
Ryan Leary and
Cade Manning went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored once. Leary also drove in a run while hitting a double.
Â
A 1-1 pitch in the bottom of the first was sent over the left field wall by Powell for his fifth round tripper of the season that also gave the Bobcats and early advantage.
Â
The bases became juiced in the third when
Chase Mora was plunked, Powell singled through the left side and
Jose Gonzalez was walked. Pena followed by working a free pass to plate a run and the second run of the frame was tallied on a wild pitch to increase the lead to three.
Â
Leary recorded the third straight single to begin the bottom of the sixth to bring home a run. Powell would eventually single through the right side that plated two to increase the lead to 6-0.
Â
Pena leadoff the next inning by smashing a 2-1 offering to right center for TXST's final run of the game.
Â
The Panthers were able to scratch across two runs in the ninth. They would have added a third but a strong throw from Manning in right field allowed Galloway to tag the runner out at the play for a game-ending double play.
Â
Next for the Bobcats is their first-ever trip to Virginia to take on Old Dominion. The first game of the three-game series is set for Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
