SAN ANTONIO – Texas State (25-13) avenged an earlier loss this season to I-35 rival UTSA (28-9) with a 5-3 win Tuesday night at Roadrunner Field. The victory was the Bobcats' fifth over a ranked opponent and the second straight coming on the road.
Â
"Probably the most common thing is we have pitched really well. Multiple guys stepped up tonight with [Triston] Dixon out and [Nathan] Medrano going down. We just found a way," said head coach
Steven Trout. "When you get to this point, it's not about how pretty your wins are, it's about finding a way to win. Also, we leave without committing an error."
Â
Peyton Zabel (1-1) put together his best start of the season as he struck out a career-high five batters while allowing just two hits in 3.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Earning his first save of the season on his birthday was
Cameron Bush after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings and striking out three. Braylon Owens (0-1) allowed a run in an inning of work to take the loss.
Â
Throwing two innings out of the bullpen with two strikeouts was
Jack Stroud. Two outs were recorded by
Nathan Medrano and
Rhett McCaffety retired a Roadrunner.
Â
For the fourth consecutive game,
Davis Powell finished with two hits. Both of his base knocks went for extra-bases with a double and home run while driving in two. Also with two hits on the night was
Ryder Hernandez and
August Ramirez. Finishing with two RBI as well was
Cade Manning while recording a double.
Â
Two walks bookended a Ramirez single to start off the second to load the bases.
Peyton Lewis was plunked by a pitch to bring in the first run of the game for either team. However, the next three Bobcats would be retired to leave the bases juiced.
Â
With two outs in the fifth,
Ben McClain was walked on four pitched. Powell came up and smashed a 3-1 offering over the left center field fence for his fourth home run of the season and increase the lead to 3-0.
Â
The shutout would end in the next half inning as the Roadrunners scored a run on a balk.
Â
Singles by
Daylan Pena, Hernandez and Ramirez load the bases with one out. After a pitching change,
Cade Manning laced a double down the right field line that plated two runs to extend the advantage to 5-1 after the top of the sixth.
Â
UTSA would again get a run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Josh Killeen. The hosts added another run in the seventh to cut the TXST's lead to 5-3.
Â
After allowing a walk to start the eighth, Bush would retire the next six batters he faced to close out the game.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a Sun Belt Conference series at Troy beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
