SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the second straight game Texas State (23-13, 8-6 Sun Belt) got a dominate performance on the mound, this time from junior
Tony Robie, in a 6-0 victory over Marshall (14-20, 4-10 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon from Bobcat Ballpark.
Robie (5-0) went a career-high 7.1 innings and matched his career best of eight strikeouts to earn the win. He limited the Thundering Herd to five baserunners with three coming via hits, all singles, and two walks.
"That was by far the longest outing of his Bobcat career. Really good job by him to continue to fill it up. He kept filling up the strike zone, stayed ahead of hitters and forced contact," said head coach
Steven Trout. "When you only use three guys in two games, that is a coach's dream, as we go for the sweep."
Davis Powell went 2-for-4 for the second game in a row.
August Ramirez hit a three-run home run and
Daylan Pena hit a solo shot. Also driving in a run was
Ryan Leary and
Chase Mora.
Throwing the final 1.2 innings on the rubber was
Jonathan Martinez. The junior right-hander allowed just two baserunners via walks.
In the first,
Jose Gonzalez was able to draw a free pass despite falling behind 1-2 in the count. He would then swipe second for his team leading 10th stolen base of the season. Mora sent a 3-2 offering through the left side of the infield for an RBI single to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 advantage.
Leary would double the lead in the fifth with an RBI single that plated Be McClain, who got into scoring position after a stolen base.
The bottom of the seventh saw TXST get runners on the corners with one out. Ramirez was called upon to pinch hit and would smash a 3-1 offering over the right field wall for a three-run homer that traveled 410 feet. Pena made it back-to-back round trippers with a solo shot down the left field line and onto the softball field to make it 6-0 in favor of Texas State.
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 11 a.m. first pitch as the Bobcats go for the series sweep.
