Baseball Hits the Road to Face Coastal Carolina

SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the first Sun Belt Conference road series, Texas State (15-6, 2-1 Sun Belt) travels to the Palmetto State to take on Coastal Carolina (12-6, 2-1 Sun Belt) at Springs Brooks Stadium. Friday's game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. CT start followed by a 1 p.m. CT first pitch on Saturday. The finale on Sunday is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
 
All three games of the series will be streamed on ESPN+

ABOUT TEXAS STATE
The Bobcats enter the weekend on a four-game winning streak after defeating HCU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in midweek action. Last season saw TXST win all 15 conference road games, becoming the first team in Sun Belt Conference history to accomplish the feat.
 
Davis Powell leads the team with a .400 batting average while also scoring 18 runs and driving in 11. His seven doubles are tied for the most on the team with Jose Gonzalez, who is hitting .392 with eight home runs, 35 RBI and scored 23 runs.
 
Leading Texas State with nine home runs is Chase Mora. He is one homer shy of tying the program's freshman record held by Tyler Sibley since 2009. Through 15 games, Mora has plated 26 runs and scored 11 times. Also hitting .300 or better is Peyton Lewis (1 HR, 5 RBI) and Cade Manning (.4 HR, 6 RBI) at .339 and .300, respectively.
 
Returning to the Friday night spot in the rotation is Levi Wells. The right-hander, who started the first game of the first two series of the season, is 4-0 with a conference-low 1.14 ERA. He has recorded 34 strikeouts in 23.2 innings of work and is holding opponents to a .193 average. Nathan Medrano (26 K) gets the start on Saturday and Zeke Wood (25 K) is slated to return to action on Sunday.
 
Triston Dixon (1-0, 4.58 ERA, 4 SV) has made a team-high 12 appearances out of the bullpen. Jack Stroud has struck out 23 over nine relief appearances and 17.1 innings while posting a 2.08 ERA. Carson Keithley has made eight relief appearances with his last seeing hm earn his first career save against the Islanders. Both Reece Gould (1-0, 6.57 ERA) and Otto Wofford (2-0, 7.94 ERA) have come out of the bullpen seven times.
 
ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA
The Chanticleers have won eight of their last 10 games that included winning the series at James Madison last weekend. They come in with a 10-4 record at home.
 
Payton Eeles is batting a conference leading .424 and has recorded 28 hits, 23 runs and seven stolen bases. Zack Beach has hit three homers to go along with 16 RBI and .371 average. A team-high six long balls have come off the bat of Derek Bender, who also driven in 29 runs while batting .359. Also hitting over .300 is Blake Barthol (.302), Caden Bodine (.349), Chad Born (.305) and Ty Dooley (.308).
 
Friday will see Jacob Morrison get handed the ball. The freshman is 2-0 with a 5.74 ERA and has struck out 32 in 26.2 innings over five starts. Saturday will see Matthew Potok take the mound. HE comes in 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 10 strikeouts over 14.0 innings. Sunday's starter is still to be announced.
 
Teddy Sharkey ahs earned four of CCU's five saves. Over eight games, he is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA and 16 strikeouts. Picking up the other save has been Bryce Shaffer (2-0, 4.82 ERA, 25 K). Making a team leading eight appearances out of the bullpen has been Darin Horn (1-0, 3.13 ERA, 37 K), Will Smith (1-1, 12.27 ERA, 10 K) and Sharkey.
 
SERIES VS. CHANTICLEERS
The all-time series is 9-5 in favor of the Chanticleers. Last season saw Texas State win two of three games in San Marcos. The Bobcats are 0-7 all-time when playing CCU on the road and have dropped all eight games they have played in Springs Brooks Stadium with the other setback being to ULM in the 2019 Sun Belt Championship.
