SAN MARCOS, Texas – Ismail Mahdi earned his second All-America honor of the season as the sophomore was named All-America Second Team as an all-purpose player by
The Athletic on Wednesday.
Mahdi, from Murphy, Texas, has been recognized as an All-American by CBS Sports/247Sports (first team, all-purpose) and
The Athletic. He is the second Bobcat in the program's FBS history to earn All-America honors in a season from multiple organizations. The other was Jeremiah Haydel in 2020 when he garnered three different All-America distinctions (FWAA, Phil Steele, ESPN).
The nation's top all-around performer, Mahdi totaled 2,014 all-purpose yards this year, which are the most in the country. He is the only FBS player who had more than 2,000 all-purpose yards at the end of the regular season.
Mahdi also had 12 total touchdowns, including 10 rushing, one receiving and one kick return. He was one of two FBS players this year with 10+ rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown, and one kick return touchdown.
Mahdi ran for 1,209 yards with 199 carries, caught 18 passes for 276 yards, and returned 20 kicks for 529 yards. He finished the regular season ranked 12th in the country in kick returns and 14th in rushing yards.
Mahdi also set two Texas State FBS records this year: most all-purpose yards in a season and most rushing yards in a season.
Known dates for upcoming All-America teams will be announced on Dec. 8 (Walter Camp), Dec. 11 (FWAA and AP), Dec. 12 (AFCA) and Dec. 13 (Sporting News). These five organizations are used by the NCAA to select its All-America consensus team.
Texas State will begin practice for the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl against Rice (4:30 pm on Dec. 26) during the week of Dec. 11.
