SAN MARCOS, Texas – The first career brace by
Olivia Wright and a defensive performance that limited Coastal Carolina (3-8-1, 0-4-1 SBC) to just four shots helped Texas State (7-4-2, 2-1-2 SBC) claim a 4-0 win Thursday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The win snapped a three-match winless streak for the Bobcats. It was also the team's fifth shutout of the season, matching the total from last year.
Of TXST's 19 shots, six came from
Victoria Meza as she placed three of them on frame. The freshman finished with a goal and an assist. Also scoring
Madi Goss as she converted a penalty kick. Claiming assists on the night were
Kennley Bradley,
Lily Erb,
Zoe Junior and Wright.
Caitlyn Draper made two saves with one in each half. Thursday was her fourth solo shutout of the season to tie for the second most by a freshman goalkeeper in program history with Amanda Byrd (2007) and Tiffany Unruh White (2000).
Meza had the first good look on goal just over three and a half minutes into the match when her attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
Wright's breakthrough came late in the 26th minute. A throw-in was headed by a Chanticleer defender that saw Junior eventually win. From the edge of the box, she sent a ball towards frame that saw Wright flick in past the goalkeeper.
A little over five minutes into the second half, Erb received a pass from Meza and sent the ball into the box to Wright. The senior forward chested the ball down perfectly to Meza, who sent a hard bouncing shot into the back of the net to double the lead.
Wright would get taken down in the box nearly six minutes later for a Bobcat penalty kick. Goss stepped up and put away the spot kick for her second goal of the season and her fifth career penalty kick conversion.
The final tally of the match came early in the 83rd minute. Meza sent in a corner kick that was headed back to the far post by Bradley. Wright was there to hit a one-timer into the back of the net for her team leading fifth goal of the season.
A stretch of three road matches over the next four contests begins on Sunday when the Bobcats travel to take on ULM at 1 p.m.
