Men’s Golf Welcomes Four Newcomers to San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Men's golf head coach Shane Howell announced four newcomers for the 2022-23 season, three transfers and one freshman will join the Bobcat program. 
 
"I am looking forward to welcoming the four newcomers to our roster," Howell said. "Each one of them brings a high-level of golf experience and a hunger to take Bobcat golf to a championship level. I can't wait for them to get started."
 
Marcelo Garza
Odessa College | St. Augustine's HS | Nueva Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico
Garza, an incoming junior, competed at Odessa College for two years. The two-time All-Conference WJCAC Conference member and two-time NJCAA All-American has the fifth best scoring average in Odessa College Golf History (71.90). In his first year with the Wranglers, he made an immediate impact, in the spring Garza led the team with a course record score of 63, shooting nine-under to help push the team to the top of the leaderboard to claim the team championship at the Rockwind Invitational, this was the program's best 18-hole scores of 267, 21-under and 11 shots over the runner-up team. Garza won the 2021 NJCAA National Preview and led the team to a runner-up finish at the NJCAA National Preview, where he shot six-under to claim medalist honors. Garza opened the spring 2022 season with an even par to finish tied for seventh at the Cactus Thaw. To open the fall 2021 season, he had a top-15 finish, and tied for second in the Wrangler lineup shooting two-under at the Andrews College/AM Invitational as a freshman. Garza is a two-time NJCAA Academic All-American.

Harrison Hineline
Rice | Boerne Samuel V. Champion HS | Boerne, Texas
Hineline was a four-year letter winner at Rice and will join the Bobcats as a graduate student. He played in 28 tournaments and 82 rounds for the Owls. Hineline closed out his collegiate career at Rice in 10th place in career stroke average (74.90) and average vs. par (+3.20) and has recorded the fourth lowest round in school history twice. The three-time Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar participated in 10 events his senior year and was third on the team with a 74.74 stroke average. In his junior season, Hineline was one of four players to participate in all eight team events with a stroke average of 74.62 and a low round 66. In his first collegiate season, he participated in six tournaments and recorded five rounds of par or better and two rounds in the 60's. Hineline was on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. 

Tom Roed Karlsen
University of North Alabama | Wang Toppidrett HS | Sandefjord, Norway
Karlsen played in all 11 tournaments in the 2021 season for North Alabama, and led the team with a 72.66 stroke average for 15 rounds in the fall. The incoming junior was the ASUN Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for his performance in the Georgia State Invitational where he tied for eighth and led the Lions to a fifth place finish. Karlsen had five top-10 finishes in the 2021 season and recorded three rounds under 70 in the spring with two 69s and a 68. He finished the spring with a 73-stroke average over 18 rounds and tied for fourth at the National Intercollegiate for his top-finish. 
 
Sakke Siltala
Finland
Siltala, an incoming freshman, was one of the top junior layers in Europe. He was on the Finnish U18 National Team and was a two-time Finnish U18 champion in 2019 and 2020. Siltala posted nine top-10 finishes at amateur and junior championships in 2018-21. On the Finnish Pro Tour, he finished third shooting seven-under at the 2021 EEZY Open. Siltala competed in the 2020 Shootout Tulokset and placed 64th in the qualifying round after setting a course record and finishing second in match play.
