EUGENE, Ore. – Alyssa Wilson set the collegiate hammer throw record for an American on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a throw of 74.78 meters/245 feet-4 inches.
Wilson became the second-best hammer thrower in collegiate history with the toss as she placed second in the event. Cal's Camryn Rogers, originally from Canada, took first place with a collegiate record of 77.67 meters/254-10.
A graduate transfer, Wilson built upon her successful first season at Texas State with the performance at Hayward Field on Thursday. Her throw was a school record and personal-best – beating out her previous PB by more than five feet. She now owns the top nine hammer throw marks in program history.
The second-place finish, which secured her eighth career first team All-America honors, matched the best finish by a Bobcat thrower – male or female – ever in the NCAA outdoor championships. The last Texas State thrower to finish national runner-up was Abigail Ruston in the shot put in 2007. Wilson is the first Bobcat to compete in the hammer throw in school history.
The second-place finish also gave the Bobcats eight team points – their most in the national outdoor championships since 2007.
Wilson competed in the shot put four hours after the hammer where she finished 23rd with a throw of 16.08 meters/52-9.25.
She will close out her trip at the outdoor championships on Saturday when she competes in the discus. The event starts at 4:05 pm CT.
