Looking Back on the 2021-22 Women’s Golf Season

This season the Texas State women's golf program competed in 11 tournaments across six states.

The team is young, made up of five sophomores and two freshmen, but this did not hold them back from putting up strong performances in tournaments this season.

The Bobcats had three top ten finishes out of four fall tournaments. To start the season off the team finished ninth among 16 teams at the Dick McGuire Invitational. In the Sooner State, the Bobcats had a pair of tenth place finishes in Norman and Broken Arrow.

In the final fall season tournament, Texas State hosted the Jim West Challenge. The team finished 13th of 15, but recorded their lowest par of the preseason tournaments, 14-over.

The Bobcats picked up where they left off for the start of the spring portion of their schedule. The team played host to 12 teams for the Texas State Invitational. They finished seventh over par and sophomore Marine Griffaut tied for 11th to be the top finisher for the Bobcats.

The student-athletes kept it rolling in the Big Easy for their next tournament. beignets, crawfish boils, and a tie for fourth awaited the Bobcats at the Dale McNamara Invitational hosted by Tulane. Sophomore Federica Tavelli-Westerlund tied for ninth and was first among the Texas State lineup, her first of the season.

For the next tournament they finished last in the field of 15 teams at the ICON Invitational, but it was a turning point for them. The last four tournaments of the season would be some of the best for the Bobcats, two tournaments being top-10 finishes and two top-five finishes.

Next the Bobcats headed north to compete in the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU. The team finished sixth, and Griffaut tied for sixth to be the top Bobcat of the tournament.

After a change in the schedule, Texas State competed at the Bama Beach Bash, hosted by fellow Sun Belt Conference member, South Alabama. The team had their best finish of the season in Gulf Shores. After day one the Bobcats were on top of the leaderboard with five-over par, and Tavelli-Westerlund was in the lead out of 99 competitors. On the second day, the team and Tavelli-Westerlund both fell one spot to finish second. This was the best finish for the sophomore going four-over par.

For the last tournament before the conference championship, the Bobcats made a trip to San Antonio to compete in the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, hosted by UTSA. They finished eighth with their second highest par of the season. Freshman Matilda Svahn recorded her best finish of the season at the tournament shooting four-over par and tied for fourth.

The final and most important tournament of the season was the Sun Belt Conference Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida. The team ended round one in eighth out of 11 teams. They jumped to fourth place with the second lowest round two score of 294. The Bobcats ended the conference championship in fourth, nine strokes behind champions Georgia Southern. Sophomore Junia Gabasa moved up nine spots in the final round with one-over par. Overall, Gabasa tied for seventh shooting eight-over par, and was one stroke behind making the All-Tournament team.

At the conclusion of the season, three Bobcats picked up conference awards. Griffaut was selected to the All-Sun Belt Conference First Team, and Tavelli-Westerlund along with Gabasa earned All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team selections.
