COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas State fell on the road to Texas A&M 8-4 Tuesday night at Blue Bell Park despite recording five extra base hits.
The Bobcats drop to 23-7 on the season while the Aggies are now 17-11.
Suffering the loss was
Trevis Sundgren (2-4) after allowing three runs on four hits. The right-hander matched his season-high with four strikeouts. Picking up the win was Chris Cortez (4-1) as he threw 2.1 scoreless innings.
Matthew Nicholas threw two shutouts frames that included inducing two double plays. Also holding TAMU without a run on the mound was
Carson Keithley (1.0 IP) and
Jonathan Martinez (0.2 IP).
Both
Daylan Pena and
Justin Thompson finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Pena also scored twice while Thompson drove in a run. Also finishing with a double on the night was
Cameron Gibbons,
Jose Gonzalez and
Dalton Shuffield.
The bottom of the first saw the Aggies get two runners into scoring position. Only one would score with it occurring on a Troy Claunch groundout to first.
Pena led off next half inning with a single to right center. He eventually got to third on a fly out and wild pitch. A 1-0 offering to Gibbons was laced down the first base line to tie the game.
TAMU went back ahead in the third as it strung together three consecutive singles for 3-1 advantage. The Aggies added two runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh to go up by seven.
A two out double by Pena down the third baseline was followed by a two-bagger off the bat of Gonzalez that hit off the first base bag to plate a run.
Pinch hitter
August Ramirez started the ninth off by being plunked and
Ben McClain followed with a single to left which brought about a pitching change for TAMU. Ramirez would come home on a throwing error on an attempted game ending double play.
Justin Thompson would hit an RBI double to left center for the final run of the game.
Next up for the Bobcats is a Sun Belt Conference series against Georgia Southern at Bobcat Ballpark. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
