SAN ANTONIO – In the final road midweek game of the season, Texas State (32-10) fell to UTSA (28-13) on Tuesday 14-8 at Roadrunner Field.
Â
Both
Ben McClain and
Dalton Shuffield recorded three hits on the night, scored twice and drove in three and two runs, respectively. Finishing with two base knocks and two runs was
Wesley Faison.
Â
Suffering the loss was
Matthew Nicholas (1-1) as he allowed four runs, all of them unearned, while striking out one. Ryan Beaird (2-1) picked up the win after throwing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Â
Going two inning each and not allowing a run was
Jonathan Martinez and
Austin Smith, who struck out three. Also recording three strikeouts was
Tristan Stivors in 1.2 innings of action.
Â
McClain led off the game with an opposite field single. He would come around to score on a double off the bat of Shuffield. It was his 48th career two-bagger to tie Jeff McVaney for second in program history. With the bases loaded,
Daylan Pena reached base via a fielder's choice to bring home a run to put the Bobcats ahead 2-0 after the opening frame.
Â
Â
The Roadrunners answered back with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
Â
After back-to-back walks to start the second, McClain went the opposite way on the first pitch he saw for a 3-run homer to tie the game. Shuffield followed by crushing a 3-2 pitch for his eighth home run of the season to put TXST back ahead 6-5.
Â
Â
The next inning saw the Bobcats again load the bases. Shuffield hit a chopper to the right of second base bag that was misplayed by the UTSA second baseman and allowed two runs to score to increase the advantage to three.
Â
UTSA retook the lead 13-8 in the sixth behind four hits, two walks, one hit by pitch and two TXST errors. The home team added the final run of the game in the next inning to take a six-run lead.
Next up for the Bobcats is a series at home against South Alabama. Friday's opener is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
